This week, we pose the question: Is having a child always ethically okay? What sorts of ethical considerations should be involved in making the decision to have a child?
We’ll read three brief articles that take the issue from three different angles, as follows:
- “Should This Be the Last Generation” by Peter Singer – This article asks the question “Is it ethical to have children?” and takes the answer to an extreme but interesting place.
- “Think Before You Breed” by Christine Overall – Goes a little further with the original question of whether having children is an ethical choice.
- “If Babies Were Randomly Allocated to Families, Would Racism End?” by Marvin Frankel and Howard Rachlin – Interesting thought experiment about “social mixing.”
Remember to bring a three dollar donation for the Setauket Community House.
